Online Gambling in New Jersey

New Jersey has licensed online casino play since 26 November 2013, longer than any other state. Every approved site runs under the permit of an Atlantic City casino, its servers sit in Atlantic City, and the Division of Gaming Enforcement publishes the list: more than 30 approved sites under nine permit holders, from the casinos' own brands to BetMGM, FanDuel, DraftKings and bet365. Any site not on that list is not approved to offer internet gaming in the state.

The rules a player meets are written down in N.J.A.C. 13:69O: you must be 21, you must be physically inside New Jersey while you play, the site must offer you deposit, spend and time limits, and it must stop and talk to you once your lifetime deposits pass $2,500. This guide walks through each of them, then the payments that work here, the tax, and the slots available to New Jersey players.

How to Check a Site Is Authorized

Two bodies share the market. The Division of Gaming Enforcement investigates, tests every gaming system before it goes live, issues the one-year internet gaming permit and takes player disputes. The Casino Control Commission licenses the casinos and their internet gaming affiliates and hears appeals.

The check is simple: find the site on the DGE's Internet Gaming Sites page and note which Atlantic City casino's permit it runs under. The law allows no one else to offer or advertise online casino play in the state, and the list is updated on a rolling basis. The casino list on this page is drawn from that register, and each review names the permit holder.

The Rules on an Authorized Site

21 and inside the state. Before an account opens the operator must verify that you are 21; letting someone younger play is a criminal offence. On every log-in, and as often as its approved system requires, the site checks your location and refuses wagers from anywhere outside New Jersey. You do not need to be a resident. Playing from outside the state through a New Jersey casino is a federal offence, and the site's own terms say so.

Limits you set. A deposit limit and a spend limit must be offered on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, plus a daily time limit. Lowering a limit takes effect by your next log-in; raising one waits until the old period has run out and you confirm it again. When lifetime deposits pass $2,500 the site pauses wagering until you acknowledge the threshold, the limit tools and 1-800-GAMBLER, and repeats that once a year.

Self-exclusion. The DGE's list, started for the casinos in 2001 and extended to internet gaming in 2013, can be joined online for internet gaming and sports wagering for one or five years, or in person or by video for one year, five years or lifetime. A lifetime listing cannot be removed; a one- or five-year listing stays until you ask for it to be lifted. Any account can also be suspended by its owner for at least 72 hours.

Slots without autoplay. Game play starts only after you place a wager and activate it; autoplay is not permitted unless the Division authorizes it. The game must show its rules and payouts without relying on sound, show the outcome of the previous game even after a disconnection, and either display the time and your session length or remind you every half hour. A malfunction voids all pays, and every game is authenticated at least once a day.

Paying In and Getting Paid in New Jersey

The rule lists what may fund an account: a bank deposit, a credit or debit card, cash or chips at the casino cage, a reloadable prepaid card issued to you, promotional credits, winnings, and anything else the Division approves. What the Borgata and Caesars cashiers actually show: VIP Preferred, an e-check drawn on your bank account and Borgata's recommended route; the Play+ prepaid account; PayPal, and Venmo at Caesars; online banking; debit cards; Apple Pay; PayNearMe, which takes cash over the counter at stores such as 7-Eleven — $5 a go, $500 a day, deposits only; wire transfer; and cash at the cage. Credit cards are allowed but not everywhere: some banks decline them for online gaming, and Caesars no longer takes them.

The terms must state how long a withdrawal takes, and the casino's review on this site records that figure. An account left untouched for a year forfeits its funds under the rule, so withdraw before you stop playing.

Tax on Winnings in New Jersey

Two layers. New Jersey counts gambling winnings, including online casino play, as gross income and withholds 3% on payouts; losses in the same year can offset winnings, never beyond them, and a net figure needs a statement of wins and losses behind it. Federally, winnings are taxable income on Form 1040, the casino issues a W-2G for larger wins — $2,000 and up for slots in 2026 — and losses are deductible only by itemising, up to the amount won. Keep your own record.

New Jersey Online Gambling — Common Questions

No. Being inside the state while you play is the whole test: a visitor to Atlantic City can open an account and play, a resident on a trip to Pennsylvania cannot, and the site's geolocation decides which is which.

It is on the Division of Gaming Enforcement's list of authorized Internet gaming sites, under the Atlantic City casino whose permit it uses. Any site not on the list is not approved, whatever it says about itself.

21. The site verifies it before the account opens, and allowing anyone younger to play is a criminal offence.

Your lifetime deposits passed $2,500. New Jersey's rule pauses wagering at that point until you acknowledge the threshold, the deposit, spend and time limits on offer, and 1-800-GAMBLER. The message repeats once a year.

Through the DGE. The online form gives a one- or five-year term for internet gaming and sports wagering; the in-person and video-conference routes add the lifetime option and can take in the Atlantic City casinos as well. Lifetime cannot be undone.

No. Since 15 August 2025 a dual-currency sweepstakes offered to people in New Jersey counts as unlawful gambling, and a first offence carries a civil penalty as high as $100,000. None is on the DGE list, and none is on this page.

To the operator first, then to the Division of Gaming Enforcement through its Internet Dispute Form. The site's terms must tell you how.

If Gambling Stops Being Fun

The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey started 1-800-GAMBLER in 1983 and has run it again since a court ruling in September 2025: free and confidential at any hour, whether you call, text or open the live chat. Every authorized site must show the number on its log-in screen and link to the Council. The DGE's own self-exclusion line is 1-833-788-4DGE. The limit tools above are yours to set at any time, and the 72-hour suspension is one tap away in every account.
