Keno

Keno is the lottery played at casino speed. A board shows the numbers 80 across, you mark some of them, and a draw picks 20 of the 80 at random. The ticket is paid according to how many of your marked numbers the draw caught, from a table printed per number of picks. There is no dealer, no opponent and no decision once the draw begins; the game is the size of the ticket and what the table pays for catching it.

Because the draw works the same way in every title, how often any catch occurs can be worked out exactly, and the only thing a studio controls is the pay table. That is what these pages are built around: the chance of every result for every ticket size, the payout each result would need to be fair, and the worth of each line on a printed table. The keno odds page carries the full tables; the how-many-numbers guide turns them into the one choice the game offers.

Mark a few numbers, watch twenty come out of eighty, and get paid by how many you caught. The exact chance of every catch, and what a pay table really costs.

How a Round Is Played

A round takes a few seconds and runs the same way under every skin.

  1. Set the stake. The bet goes down before anything is drawn, within the limits the game allows.
  2. Mark the numbers. Tap numbers on the board, or press quick pick to have the game choose. Most titles take from one up to ten picks; some allow fifteen or twenty, and a few fix the count.
  3. Start the draw. The game draws 20 numbers one by one and lights each one on the board. Numbers you marked that come up are catches.
  4. Read the pay table. The table for your pick count lists what each number of catches pays, as a multiple of the stake. A row that is not listed pays nothing, and on most tables that includes a small number of catches on a large ticket.
  5. Collect or go again. The win is added to the balance and the marked numbers usually stay in place for the next draw.

Some games add a bonus ball, a multiplier drawn before the numbers, or the option to buy an extra ball after the draw. Each is a separate wager or a separate rule printed in the game, and the arithmetic of the draw underneath it does not change.

One Number in Four: What a Ticket Can Expect

Because 20 of 80 is one number in four, a ticket of any size averages a quarter of its marked numbers caught. The last column is the chance every marked number comes up: once in 326 draws for four numbers, once in 8,911,711 for ten. Every result between is on the odds page.

The Pay Table Is the Price

Two keno games with the same board and the same draw can return very different shares of the stake, and the whole difference is the pay table. A table line names a number of catches and a multiple of the stake, and what that line gives the player over time is the multiple weighted by how often the catch occurs. Summed across the table, those weighted multiples are the game's return, and the shortfall from one hundred per cent is its edge.

That arithmetic makes the chance tables worth having. A line paying ten for one on five catches from five numbers marked looks generous until it is set against the chance of that catch, 0.064%, which says the line is worth 0.064% of the stake per unit of payout. The odds page gives that worth for every line of every ticket size, so any printed table becomes a short sum.

Strategy, Honestly

Every number on the board has the same chance of being drawn, 25.00% on each draw, and that chance does not remember what came out last time. No number is hot, cold or due, no corner of the board is favoured, and a quick pick is exactly as good as a ticket chosen by hand.

What the player does decide is how many numbers to mark, and that choice reshapes the game a great deal while leaving its cost, which the pay table alone fixes, exactly where it was. A one-number ticket wins a quarter of its draws for a small multiple; a ten-number ticket wins something on fewer draws and carries a line that pays thousands of times the stake once in millions of tries. The how-many-numbers guide sets those shapes side by side.

Video, Instant and Live Keno

Online keno comes in three shapes. The common one is video keno: a board, a draw animated in seconds and the next round a press away. Instant forms shorten it further, drawing the moment the ticket is confirmed and sometimes fixing the pick count. Live keno streams a physical ball draw from a studio on a timer, with the same pay-table logic and no free mode, which is why no live table is among the games here.

The board can differ too. Most titles draw 20 from 80; a board of 40 with 10 drawn also exists, and every figure shifts with it: a full catch of five marked numbers comes round every 2,611 draws there and every 1,551 on the large board. The rules screen states the board and the draw, and the odds page covers both.

Keno FAQs

20 of 80 in the standard game; on the 40-number board it is usually 10. Each game's rules screen states its own figures.

One draw in 8,911,711 with ten numbers marked on the standard board. Catching all five of five is one in 1,551, and all four of four one in 326.

Not one that lowers the cost, which the pay table decides; but the ticket size shapes the session, with few numbers paying often and little and many numbers paying seldom and large. The how-many-numbers guide shows each size in full.

No. Each number is drawn in 25.00% of draws, and a draw has no memory of the last one. Hot, cold and due numbers describe the past and say nothing about the next draw.

There is no single figure. Every catch has a known chance, and a game's return is what its printed table pays across those chances, so the margin is simply what the table withholds. Games differ widely, and one game can differ between pick counts.

No. The draw cannot tell a hand-marked ticket from a random one; any ten numbers have identical prospects, so quick pick only saves the tapping.
