Lightning Roulette
Lightning Roulette is a European roulette wheel with one rule changed and one added. The changed rule: a straight-up bet that wins without being struck pays 29:1 rather than 35:1. The added rule: before each spin, one to five numbers are struck by lightning and given multipliers of 50x to 500x, and a straight-up bet on a struck number that then wins is paid at that multiplier instead. Every other bet on the layout, the splits, the dozens, red and black, pays exactly what it pays on any European table.
Because the only change is to the straight-up bet, the game can be read from that bet alone. What follows is the floor: what a straight-up bet returns if it is never struck. The multipliers are drawn by software from a distribution the studio does not publish, so the return above the floor is the studio's to state.
A Straight-Up Bet, Three Ways
A straight-up number lands once in 37 spins on either wheel. The lightning floor is 30 units returned on 37 spins; the gap to the plain table, 16.22% of the stake, is what the struck numbers have to return just to match European roulette.
What the Floor Means
A straight-up bet on a plain European wheel returns 97.30%. The same bet on Lightning Roulette, if lightning never touched it, returns 81.08%, a house edge of 18.92%. The six units a round taken from the payout are the fund that pays the multipliers, and the figure the studio states for the game says how much of that fund comes back. For the game to break even with plain roulette on straight-up bets, the struck numbers must return 16.22% of every unit staked on numbers, averaged over every spin including the ones where the player's number is not struck.
That arithmetic is the whole case for and against the game. A player who wants the chance at a 500x on a single number pays for it in the 29:1 on every unstruck win; a player who never bets straight up is playing ordinary European roulette at 2.70% on the outside bets, under brighter lights.
XXXtreme and the Other Multiplier Wheels
XXXtreme Lightning Roulette keeps the same floor and adds two draws: Chain Lightning, which can add up to nine more multiplied numbers after the first one to five, and Double Strikes, which can lift a number's multiplier to 600x to 2,000x, with a stated maximum of 2,000x. More struck numbers and larger multipliers from the same floor mean a different distribution, not a better one; the stated return is the only thing that can say which is more generous.
Pragmatic Play's Mega Roulette draws multipliers of its own on a few numbers a spin, and Playtech's Quantum Roulette does the same with its own ceilings. Each of them funds its multipliers the same way, from a straight-up payout below 35:1, and each is read the same way: find the unstruck payout in the rules panel, compute the floor, and ask what the studio states for the whole game.
